Sunrise Center has expanded its sustainable living programs to include classes on permaculture and organic farming on the beautiful island of Maui. We are currently leasing three beautiful properties that are being farmed under the direction of Hale Akua Garden Farm. Hale Akua Gardens, as it is known for short, is well-known in the neighborhood for its classes in organic farming.

Michael Shiva D'Addario and Lori Grace, the owners of Hale Akua Garden Farm, are excited, together with us at Sunrise Center, about expanding the scope of organic farming classes available on Maui. In conjunction with Hale Akua Garden Farm, Sunrise Center will be offering a variety of afternoon, one-day and weekend programs in organic farming. We are also contemplating offering a week-long course later in 2008.

Additionally, we are happy to design special tutorials for individuals and small groups whose schedules do not permit joining one of our pre-established programs. We are dialoguing with certain colleges in California about offering cooperative programs in organic farming. In so doing, students may be able to receive college credit when they come to take our courses.

We're excited, too, about our Residence Program. It is possible for you to learn about organic farming and sustainable living by living at Hale Akua Garden Farm for up to six months. If you are interested, please apply directly to Hale Akua Garden Farm's WWOOFer Program. As a WWOOFer (Willing Workers On Organic Farms), you will learn organic farming by working on the farm for three to four hours per day and by taking our afternoon or evening classes in farming and other topics.

To apply for this program, please call Michael Shiva D'Addario at 808-572-9300 or e-mail him. For biographies of various teachers who will be teaching with us, please see our Teachers' page, or the Hale Akua Garden Farm Instructors' page.
