redButtonMonthly NVC Groups Update:

Conflict Improv: An Evening of Compassionate Communication (NVC) Role- Playing will be held twice a month (see dates below)

with Lori Grace, Scott Catamas, Ritch Davidson and Phil Willcher

Deepen and broaden your skills using Nonviolent Communication (AKA Compassionate Communication) in these lively, informative, once-a-week practice groups. Each evening will offer many possibilities to better meet the variety of needs of the group, always sharing new insights on how to transform judgmental thoughts and reactions into sincere experiences of compassion and empathy. These Role-play/Practice sessions will include at least two facilitators, and likely others; thus, we can break into interest groups as needed, and so everyone will have plenty of personalized attention.

We will offer a brief introduction to the basic four-step process for those new to NVC; and, of course there will be lots of opportunities to practice, practice, practice — always using your own issues and challenges that are alive for you in the moment.

redButtonBi-Monthly Inspired and Inspiring Movies — Viewing and Discussion

Hosted by Scott Catamas
, Ed Ellsworth, Lori Grace Star and occasional special guest speakers
Join us about twice a month for viewings of movies that inspire us — to grow, to take action, and to connect more deeply with our hearts, with the planet, and with each other.

We'll watch these inspired/inspiring movies, then take time for discussion and sharing our thoughts and feelings about what we just saw, and, perhaps on some occasions, about what actions we might take.

We'll provide popcorn and we request you bring other snacks and/or drinks to share, potluck-style.

Silent Auction - FUNdraiser for Burma Humanitarian Relief:

Please contact: Scott or Jennifer and let them know how you can help or to bid on items.
Scott Catamas: 415-336-1276 or newearthscott@aol.com
Jennifer Zurick: 202-441-2888 or jzurick@burmamission.org

We invite you to participate in a month-long silent auction. You can help by donating time or services! Or by bidding on (and, hopefully, winning the bid).

Perhaps you would be interested in helping to host another event. Scott Catmas, working with Jennifer, is considering offering more fundraising events in both Southern and Northern California.

Of course, straightout financial donations are terrific, too. The money goes towards purchasing medical supplies in Thailand, where the BHM backpackers pick them up and then hike into Burma.

Information and Letter-Writing
Presented by Barbara Lovejoy, Max Perrey and Katie Cartwright

Plans for aerial spraying of pesticide pheromone in the Bay Area urban areas were halted June 19. Sterile moths will be introduced to disrupt the light brown apple moth's mating pattern. However...It's Not Over!

The State's action has not gone far enough to assure the complete safety of people, our water, food and wildlife. Aerial spraying is still planned in forested areas, possibly even Mount Tam. The pesticide to be sprayed is not safe for wildlife, air, and water. Thus, we are all still in danger from pesticide drift. There are no long-term studies showing that alternate methods proposed for stopping the moth have proven safe.

Additionally, the US Dept of Agriculture anticipates many more "pests" being brought to this country as a result of globalization. Aerial spraying of urban areas is off the table for now, but it may yet be proposed as a solution to new pests.

Our next battle is to help shift our world towards using more benign and natural, instead of chemical, solutions; from pesticide on our foods to organic food. Stay informed and stay active!

This FREE meeting will have an informative talk (including information on affidavits for damage claims), Q & A time, and letter writing to key people in government. For more info email: Katie Cartwright at katiecart.kathryn@gmail.com or see www.stopthespraymarin.org

We need official, signed statements that can be sent to elected officials, governmental agencies and/or judicial bodies, voicing our disagreement with the pesticide operation.

PLEASE, invite your friends and neighbors to this informative and interactive evening.

If you can, please bring paper, pen, envelopes, stamps for 5-10 letters and/or laptop computers. You will be able to print letters to sign at our office. Call the office for directions 415-924-7824.

Cry the Beloved Country OR Do The Right Thing
(vote for your choice by June 25th)

Hosted by Scott Catamas and Oshalla Marcus

Cry the Beloved Country is one of the most gripping films that Scott has ever seen. It paints an extraordinary picture of two radically different lives and cultures. James Earl Jones portrays an impoverished preacher who lives on the enormous estate of South African Landowner Richard Harris. Both are men of integrity, brought together through a mutual tragedy. The film presents multiple points of view, and is exquisitely filmed. Both lead actors give extraordinary performances, and the score by John Barry is considered to be one of his classics.

OR

Do the Right Thing was the film that established Spike Lee as a dynamic writer and director. His screenplay for this film was nominated for an Academy Award and won several other awards. The cast is led by Danny Aiello, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance. The setting is during the hottest days in summer when tensions are high and breaking points are thin. Spike Lee demonstrates that racism can be passed down through the generations. Violence begets violence and the end of this movie makes you feel how intense confusion, anger, violence, ignorance and racism can become. Tempers flare and rage is in the air. This movie does not offer solutions; it raises questions. Which is a perfect starting point for a dynamic discussion.

Things are warming up faster than the scientist thought previously. More and more evidence is piling up that we need to stay current with what is happening and how we can impact the change. Lori and Scott attended the Climate Project update in L.A. They urgently appeal to you to attend to hear what the Scientist are saying. Be prepared. Come and learn. Denial does not make it better only joining community and learning what we can do as a grassroots movement can impact real change.
